Academic Program
Fallis has special programs for students with mild to moderate disabilites, Speech, Title I, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Physical Education, Challenge Program, Library Media Center and a Technology Lab. Our reading program is published by Houghton Mifflin Publishing. The math program is published by Mimosa.
Special Education
One full time special education teacher serves students identified with mild to moderate disabilities in the special education classroom and in the regular classroom, as their learning plan specifies. Inclusion is a priority at our school; therefore, teachers make every effort possible to provide instruction in the regular classroom. Groups taught in the regular classroom by the special educator may include special education students and other students experiencing learning difficulties.
Title I
The Title One Program addresses its responsiblilty in preparing students to meet the standards by focusing on literacy instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics. The goals that drive daily instruction require students to develop broad-based thinking strategies, problem-solving, that will be critical in all areas of study. We will continue to focus on Literacy Development.
English for Speakers of Other Languages
The English Language Acquisition Program services students in grades
K-5, who speak a language other than English. The goal of the Program is to provide eligible students with the English language skills they need to participate in the mainstream English language instructional program. The services provided are native language instruction in Spanish, sheltered English, and English language development. English language development is sometimes referred to as ESL, (English as A Second Language). Our students are provided with meaningful, relevant, content area instruction, and contexts upon which to base their language skills.
Music Program
Our music program at Fallis Elementary is designed specifically to support the writing and reading programs. Our children entertain parents and families every nine weeks. We combine rap, singing, dance, and instrumental musice with drama and narratives whether in poetry, rap, or story form that we use on our programs. We always seem to perform to a full house; and this in turn is a great incentive to the children who work very hard to perfect their performances.
Physical Education
Physical Education is provided to students in Grades 1 through 5 with a full time Physical Education Teacher. Students have Physical Education on a rotating basis every third day. Emphasis is on developing skills for all students, and physical fitness as it relates to students leading a healthy lifestyle. Such activities include soccer, football, basketball, climbing ropes, jumping ropes, tumbling and gymnastics. Team work and cooperation is an intregal part of the program.
Challenge Program
Students are identified using many criteria's such as testing, Teacher and Parent inventories, recommendations and achievement tests.
The Gifted and Talented teacher works with students in small group instruction to extend the classroom curriculum. This enables the advanced learners and the opportuity to be in small groups with their peers. The emphasis is on higher level thinking skills, vocabulary development, logic and problem solving.
Art
Art education is proved by the classroom teacher. It is often taught in conjunction with reading and writing or as part of a thematic unit. Art instruction includes implementation of components of the art standards; using a variety of media i.e. paint, chalk, waterclolr, crayons, etc.
Technology
Technology is integrated into every aspect of the instructional program. Students through technology will learn and practice the steps of the writing process including, pre-writing, rought draft, revising, editing, and publishing. Teachers will utilize technology for direct instruction and professional growth. A part-time teacher supervises our Technology Lab and instructs students in key-boarding skills and multimedia projects.
Library Media Center
The librarian will collaborate with classroom teachers to enhance student achievement, coordinate research projects, activities to extend classroom instruction, provide age appropriate materials and learning centers for all primary and intermediate students.
Character Education
The goal of character education at Fallis is to instill a positive belief in both students and staff that through character education, students will excel not only socially, but also academically. Character traits are integrated into all aspects of the school's curriculum. New character traits are presented monthly to the student body through assemblies and classroom activities. Assemblies have included skits, speakers, and performances by both staff and students. Classrooms are also rewarded for exemplary demonstration of character traits. This is determined by character trait cards distributed by staff to students based on observed practiced trait behaviors.
Discipline Program
Bully proofing helps students understand that they have the right to be safe at school, and provides them with a nurturing environment. Students are taught how to solve problems by using strategies to respond to a person who is bullying them. They learn about why children bully each other, the difference between normal conflict and bullying, the difference between tattling and telling and how to "bully proof" themselves.
